The Discord intern keeps ignoring my requests and detailed reports on why Discord isn't loading avifs correctly and it's annoying me.

Note: This webpage will probably struggle on iOS, please let me know how it is on other devices.

So avifs are wonderful, great files optimised for the web and compressed sources, smaller than JPG, but... one thing I like to do with them is create animated avifs.

Like this:

60FPS animated images (gifs?) are wonderful... (If you're wondering, it seems chromium doesn't like it when they're above 60FPS)... AVIFs are a lot better than gifs in this way (now I can remake popular stupid anime gifs at a higher quality).

You can make files that are a lot higher quality than gifs, since AVIFs are basically just a subset of the AV1 format.

iOS hates animated AVIFs. Thanks iOS! I hope you have a MACBOOK with an M3 APPLE SILICON CHIP or newer!! I have no idea what the android situation is like but I imagine it'll work if you have a Google Pixel (and nothing else)!

I create AVIFs on my system in multiple ways, mainly by using Actions For Nautilus to convert images directly in Nautilus. Additionally, I have an mpv script that cuts videos I'm playing, with one of the options being to create an AVIF clip from a video, the AVIF clip that's outputted is 540p, which I've found to be a nice middle-ground between file size and quality (since nobody is viewing Discord gifs that closely).

So it's not to hard to create AVIFs... but Discord hate me anyways. Discord my favourite electron app just has some design flaws that make viewing certain animated AVIFs irritating.

When you upload an animated AVIF, there's a good chance the file size will be heavily inflated as Discord transcodes all AVIFs to a WEBPs. The above example started as a 7MB AVIF (it also destroys the quality too but that's not the main issue here).

Oh and on mobile, if the input AVIF is large enough there's a good chance Discord will just refuse to load the outputted WEBP file anyways, I believe it makes two WEBP files of different quality, it's really buggy how it's done regardless.

Me clicking an image, and clicking it again to zoom in, so much waste. Why does the avif you send turn into a WEBP with an inflated file size, then only turn into an AVIF when you click it and zoom in-- it makes no sense to me (always allow AVIFs on supported devices)!

You'd have a better experience clicking 'Open in Browser' which I'm sure Discord loves, you're hosting it anyway!!
